Washington DC, Maryland & Delaware: Cherry Blossoms, Chesapeake Seafood, and the Best of the Mid-Atlantic

Washington DC, Maryland, and Delaware deliver the National Mall’s cherry blossoms, Chesapeake Bay seafood, Baltimore’s craft cocktail bars, and Dogfish Head in Delaware

The Mid-Atlantic corridor between Washington DC, Maryland, and Delaware covers more ground – historically, culturally, and culinarily – than most travelers give it credit for. This is a region where the nation’s most significant monuments sit a short drive from some of its best oyster bars, and where a cherry blossom walk along the National Mall in spring is one of the most quietly beautiful experiences in America.

Washington DC anchors it all. The capital carries its history visibly – the monuments, the Smithsonian institutions, the wide boulevards and neoclassical architecture that signal the ambition of a young country trying to announce itself to the world. Beneath that civic weight, though, is a genuine dining scene – chef-driven restaurants operating at a level that would hold their own in any major American city.

Baltimore sits forty minutes north and operates with a completely different energy – grittier, more neighborhood-focused, and anchored by a Chesapeake Bay seafood culture that is deeply local and deeply proud. The cocktail bar scene here is exceptional, and the Georgian restaurant near the Inner Harbor gave me one of the most genuinely surprising meals I have had anywhere on the East Coast.

Delaware, a short drive east, is easy to underestimate and rewarding not to. Dogfish Head – one of America’s most innovative and respected craft breweries – is reason enough to make the trip, and the coastal towns that line the Delaware shore add a quiet, unhurried charm that rounds out the region beautifully.

This guide covers where to eat, where to stay, and the experiences that made this stretch of the Mid-Atlantic one of my most memorable trips on the East Coast.Washington DC, Maryland & Delaware travel guide – cherry blossoms, Chesapeake seafood, Baltimore cocktail bars, and Dogfish Head craft beer.
