Outbound Mammoth

A weekend stay at Outbound Mammoth was a lovely way explore Mammoth Lakes while staying near Mammoth Village

In the aftermath of the Los Angeles fires, we found ourselves desperate for a sanctuary—a place to escape the chaos, reconnect with our inner selves, and simply breathe freely again. The unrelenting stress, grief, and sadness that had gripped us for days became too much to bear, and it became clear that we needed to step back and prioritize our own well-being.

There comes a point during tragic events when self-care becomes not just important, but essential. During the days of fires, that moment arrived for us. We realized we couldn’t continue to carry the weight of anxiety and sorrow without risking our mental and emotional health. It was time to take a deliberate step away from the devastation and give ourselves space to heal and reset.

With this realization, one thing led to another, and I booked a stay at my favorite refuge in Mammoth Lakes: Outbound Mammoth. Returning to this cherished haven felt like the perfect antidote to the turmoil—a chance to find solace and regain perspective amidst the beauty and tranquility of the mountains.

This time, because it was so last minute, the only room type available was the FIREPLACE SUITE. Now, there’s something to be said about perfect timing – because this was the exact refuge we needed for a comfortable and beautiful stay.

Outbound Mammoth also a pet-friendly destination – where dogs are welcome for a nominal nightly fee. During morning and evening walks, I greatly appreciated how property is situated in a walkable and inviting area. It gave me a feeling of being immersed in the charm of the surrounding neighborhood – something I would not have felt staying closer to Mammoth Village.

One of the other pet friendly highlights for Artemis was the off-leash pet area, conveniently located in the heart of the inner courtyard. This dedicated space allowed her to roam freely and play in a safe environment.

Plus, she absolutely loved the complimentary dog bed and dog treats the front desk gave us for our stay! I truly appreciated the welcoming atmosphere that made Outbound Mammoth feel like our home away from home.

What I loved the most about this particular stay was the availability of restaurants and nightlight along Old Mammoth Road. Everything – from Distinct Brewing to Mammoth Tavern was within comfortable walking distance.

Our stay at Outbound Mammoth provided exactly that: a much-needed respite that nurtured our peace of mind and helped us reset both mentally and emotionally. The crisp mountain air, tranquil surroundings, and the slower pace of life offered a stark contrast to the frenetic energy we left behind. Each moment we spent here, from serene morning walks to get crepes at Cafe Crepe to relaxing next to the fire pit after snowboarding, felt like a balm for the soul.

This stay wasn’t just a getaway; it was a healing experience, one that brought clarity and calm to our minds and hearts. We absolutely loved the way this place restored us, leaving us with a renewed sense of balance and appreciation for life.

August 2024 –

After a previous visit to Mammoth and a lovely stay at Outbound Mammoth, it was only natural that I would return while in the area for a celestial photography workshop in Bishop.

As I was traveling solo, I opted for a room with a king bed. Unlike my previous visit, my room didn’t feel like I was in a cozy ski chalet. It felt like an updated room with a comfortable bed – which was exactly what I needed.

For a brief summer stay, my room at Outbound Mammoth provided me with exactly what I wanted at the price I wanted to pay.

March 2024 –

In planning a weekend in Mammoth Lakes, I knew that I wanted to stay in Mammoth Lakes proper, rather than in June Lake or Bishop.

After checking some Airbnbs and Trip Advisor recommendations, I didn’t feel that anything felt right. That is until I searched Travel Zoo and found a – shocking to me – incredible deal with Outbound Mammoth that beat the best deal on the hotel’s own website.

After checking with another friend that had used Travel Zoo for a great deal during a previous trip to Europe, I booked it.

Stay and Service

What I truly enjoyed about the room was the space. It was recently renovated and felt clean. The bed was comfortable; the two televisions (one in the bedroom and the other in the living room) were nice; and the fireplace really brought the room together.

However,  I immediately noticed the fireplace was a wood burning fireplace. Which is great. However, no wood was provided in the bag. A quick stop to the front desk rectified the situation – with the front desk agent coming to the room and physically starting the fire herself.

Later, a maintenance person arrived with another crate of wood. Which was greatly appreciated for the stay.

Location

What I enjoyed the most about the location of Outbound Mammoth was how easy it was to walk to two great places: Roberto’s Cafe and Cafe Crepe.

Drinking tequila and conversing while eating chips and salsa at 7,000 ft elevation is a habit I can definitely get behind. Likewise, having a unique and delicious crepe truck on the hotel property made eating breakfast while enjoying the sights of the Eastern Sierras and snow a unique and fun experience.

Overall

Overall, my stay at Outbound Mammoth was exactly what I wanted. I simply could not justify the above $1,000 a night The Westin Monache Resort, Mammoth was charging that weekend.

Later, I found out that it was because the dates of the trip lined up with Elevation: Mammoth’s Gay Ski Weekend. So, I could completely understand the price hike based around a popular event.

Happily, my booking at Outbound was MUCH more reasonable, with a generous complimentary upgrade from my original booked room type to a one bedroom chalet.

Plus, I loved being able to walk around and have easy access to everything in Mammoth proper.
