Issen Yoshoku in Kyoto, Tokyo serves one dish and one dish extremely well: a variation of the traditional okonomiyaki
Our guide from our Evening Guided Walking Tour of the Gion District in Kyoto, Japan was very adamant that before we part ways, we take time to go to Issen Yoshoku with him.
Now, I hadn’t heard about Issen Yoshoku before we arrived. But, from the moment I took a look around – I realized I was in for a unique situation. The location was Japan kitsch in the most interesting and amusing of ways. But, the star of the show as definitely their version of the okonomiyaki, a savory pancake sandwich.
The ingredients for their okonomiyaki is relatively simple:
Spring Onion
Egg (I had this removed from mine)
Dried Shrimp
Grilled Fish Paste
Dried Bonito
Japanese Wagyu beef
Ginger
Tempura Batter
Konjak Jelly
Flour
Worcester sauce
Seaweed
Simple? Yes. But, the combination of taste in my mouth created a layered moment of flavor in every bite.
Again there is only one dish that is served at Issen Yoshoku. And one dish is all they need to perfect.
