When Beth told me that she was moving to Northern California, I was all sorts of sad – but excited for her new adventure. For our last dinner (for the time being) I suggested we meet at UOVO in Studio City. I’d visited their location in Marina de Rey and loved it. Soon, a date was set.
After hug and how are you’s, it was time to order. In looking at the choices, we settled on ordering from the tasting menu.
Now, I present our version of…
THE REGIONAL
Battta di carne – modified with the YELLOWTAIL CRUDO
(Japanese Yellowtail with red Fresno chili pepper and micro-arugula dressed with olive oil, lemon. blood orange)
RAGU
(Original “Bolognese” recipe with beef, pork and without cheese, milk or cream.)
TORTELLINI
(Crema di Parmigiano – Handmade meat tortellini (contains pork) in a cream of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, inspired by “Antica Osteria del Mirasole”)
AMATRICIANA
(Handmade tonnarelli in a sauce with exclusively imported tomatoes from Basilicata, Pecorino Romano DOP, imported Italian guanciale (pork), red chili pepper)
TIRAMISU AL CUECHIAIO (shared in one cup)
(Tiramisu’ al cucchiaio – Our version of tiramisu’ inspired by our favorite at Felice a Testaccio in Rome contains hazelnut)
The courses offered enough food to enjoy the absolute pleasure of tactile taste and sensation from the freshness of the dishes – without feeling uncomfortably stuffed. The taste profile was outstanding, with the highlights for me being the tortellini and the ragu.
Overall, Uovo has a great pasta tasting menu. For immediate seating, I’d say go between 4 -6pm, before the line at the Sherman Oaks one gets stupid busy. If I needed to give my preferred location, I would suggest the Marina Del Rey location, as it overlooks the Pacific Ocean. In any case, if you’re looking for a fast casual outstanding pasta place with a straightforward menu, you can’t go wrong with UOVO.
