Infinite Love at the Ace Hotel Kyoto

The "Infinite Love" art exhibit showcased results of an artistic inspiration contest between the Ace Hotel in Kyoto and The Louvre in Paris

The traveling “Infinite Love” art exhibit, a collaboration between the Louvre Museum and The National Art Center, Tokyo, originally ran ran from March 1 – June 12, 2023 in Tokyo. Then, the exhibition traveled to Kyoto for display at the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art, from June 27  -September 24, 2023. Alongside, the Ace Hotel Kyoto ran a special exhibit displaying the theme of “another form of love”.

The exhibit, in the words of the hotel:

“At Ace Hotel Kyoto, with the theme of “another form of love”, the works of modern love that have been publicly solicited to the public will be exhibited at the same time at the lobby gallery on the first floor. “Love” is the fundamental emotion of human beings. The story of “love” drawn in a masterpiece, and the appearance of modern “love” that transcends time.””

While waiting for our taxi to Sushi Shigetomi for dinner, I took some time to view the artistic works on display. The collaboration and inspiration between such great museums in reflecting about love – both timeless and modern – was poignant.

In reflection of the theme and the selected pieces, there were two works that caught my eye:

The first piece that caught my eye was “Secret Love.” In it, a family is at a hidden beach, away from crowds and focused on the playful love of family relationships.

The second piece, “Nothing and Everything” was a multimedia piece that showcased aspects of love through food, sketches on envelopes, through nature, through culture and through the spiritual desire for inner knowing.

Honestly, the pieces were consistent with the theme and the display was tightly curated. I wish I could have viewed the original pieces. But, due to our schedule in Kyoto, I simply didn’t have time. In reflection, the modern interpretation exhibit at the Ace Hotel Kyoto was exactly what I needed.

Yes, there is something to be said about the great works of the past. But, what is more current and modern is sometimes more meaningful.
