Parche in Oakland features a vibrant, Columbian-inspired menu with bold flavors in a vibrant atmosphere

Planning a trip to the San Francisco area wouldn’t have felt complete without seeing my friend Margaret in Oakland. In past visits, I had stayed at the Kissel Uptown Oakland, but this time, I was only making a brief stop before continuing on to Sonoma Valley. When Margaret suggested Parche for lunch, I immediately agreed—her taste is impeccable, and she’s one of the few people whose recommendations I trust without question.

Street parking was a breeze, and within moments of arriving, I spotted Margaret and waved. After a warm greeting, we were quickly seated at a lovely table by the window, setting the stage for a lovely lunch.

We both started with a cup of TEA (black tea with smooth notes of rose), its floral notes adding a soothing touch to the afternoon.

Then came the YUCCA FRIES. They were crispy, golden, and incredibly flavorful. We both loved the sauce and the overall flavor of the dish.

The CELERY  ROOT TIRADITO (shaved celery root, roasted pepper leche de tigre, black garlic vegan aioli, smoked green grapes, Chile fresno) was as visually stunning as it was delicious. With each bite, we both raved about how it was an inventive balance of textures and bold flavors.

For my main dish, I chose the AREPA DE CHOCOLO (sweet corn griddle cake, farmer’s cheese, uchuva-tomtillo compote, charred-brown butter with crispy natural chicken thigh). Each bite was an exploration of rich, layered flavors, bringing the essence of Colombian cuisine to life. It was so indulgent and satisfying that I could barely finish it.

After lunch, we made one final stop at Delah Coffee for lattes and our goodbyes.

Standing there, reminiscing, I was reminded of how a simple compliment – “Hi! Your friend’s lipstick is amazing” – at Kitchen Story over a decade ago sparked a lifelong friendship. Moments like these make me grateful for the serendipity of connection and the joy of experiencing incredible food with people who truly matter in my life.
