There’s something truly special about maintaining friendships that trace back to high school. Over the years, connecting with my high school friend Bryan – who now lives in Napa Valley with his family – has been a pleasure.

On previous visits, he introduced me to Napa General Store, and we shared pastries and coffee from Mini Model by Model Bakery and Bouchon Bakery. For this early morning, our collective time was limited as we both had morning meetings. But, he graciously carved out an hour in his schedule and suggested we meet at Journey Coffee in Napa.

Parking was a breeze in the spacious lot. Upon arrival, I discovered that their kitchen was temporarily out of service due to a broken oven. I thought it would be fine, as I just wanted to order the AVOCADO TOAST-Y (avocado, Braggs seasoning, Winston’s thick sourdough). But, between me ordering and wanting to pay, the repair person arrived, blocking the entrance to the kitchen.

Fortunately, I was still able to indulge in a beautifully crafted LATTE with lavender syrup, a small consolation that set the tone for a cozy morning.

When Bryan arrived, he convinced me to try a RASPBERRY POP TART, and we took our seats outside. Wrapped in my turtleneck top, I was grateful for the extra layer in the crisp Napa air.

Our conversation was fast-paced, intellectually stimulating, and refreshingly authentic. As we sipped and savored our time, I found myself reflecting on the value of friendships that are built on mutual respect and growth. Previously, I became aware of the trap of interacting with narcissistic people who cannot seem to navigate life without falling into the trap of self-pity.

Some friendships are meant for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. I am incredibly grateful that my connection with Bryan has evolved into the latter.

With the warm atmosphere of Journey Coffee surrounding us and the Napa morning unfolding, it was the perfect way to start the day. As we said our goodbyes, I felt a resounding comfort that even the simplest moments – shared with the right people – can feel extraordinary.
