Room 623

Room 623 served as a hidden gem in Harlem, where jazz lovers could immerse themselves in late-night sessions in the heart of New York City.

During an incredible conversation had in passing with the Food & Beverage Director, Mensa, at 1 Hotel Central Park,  he suggested that I go to Harlem and check out Room 623 for an experience of jazz in New York.

So, after an opening session of music at The Jazz Club in Midtown, followed by dinner at Clay in Harlem, I walked the few blocks over to Room 623 with a sense of quiet excitement.

The location felt like a hidden secret I was eager to learn more about. After checking in with Marcus, the manager at the door, a group of us were ushered in and guided toward a general area to sit. However, as I entered the space, I noticed a seat open right in front of the band. Curious, I seized the opportunity to ask Marcus if I could sit there. To my delight, he graciously agreed.

A few minutes later, while chatting with my server, I sensed a hint of surprise in her voice. She questioned and I explained that the manger said that I could sit in the plush seat – as it was empty.

After I’d given my order for dessert, I curiously went online to see what had aroused the interest in her question. It was there that I discovered that the chair was categorized as Premium Reserved Velvet Chair Seating, which was technically different from what I had purchased. I was immediately surprised and in gratitude for my accidental upgrade and honestly, truly thrilled to have such an amazing view of the performers.

As Lee Hogans and company took the stage, I knew I was in for a different kind of soul filled experience. The night unfolded with a rousing set that featured a delightful mix of self-written pieces and timeless classics, including Duke Ellington’s “Caravan” and Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish.”

At one point, when the music hit such a pace and powerful resonance, I found my eyes welling up with tears. I became overwhelmed by the raw emotion and talent on display. As the notes of “Caravan” filled the air, I couldn’t help but reflect on how this music embodies the Black experience, transformed and celebrated in the vibrant heart of Harlem.

To complement the evening, I enjoyed a serving of MACHA CRÈME BRÛLÉE topped with candied ginger. I paired this with a cup of POMEGRANATE TEA. The combo was the perfect finish to a night rich with culture and emotion. It – simply put – hit.

When Marcus stepped onto the stage to thank the performers at the end of the set, I was riding a high from the incredible music. However, he delivered a gut-wrenching announcement: Room 623 would be closing at the end of the month. He expressed confidence that the vibrant spirit of live jazz in Harlem would evolve into something new and exciting in the future. I truly, deeply hope so.

As I left Room 623, I carried with me a profound appreciation for the artistry and heritage that the club represents in Harlem. I felt an immense sense of gratitude for my conversation with Mensa, which had led me into those hallowed walls that evening.

Sometimes, you never know where your next casual conversation will lead you.

Sometimes, it’s two complimentary drinks.

Other times, it’s an experience that feeds the very depth of your soul.
