One of the best things about my life is when friends visit places and send me their recommendations. So, when Hillary visited San Diego with her partner and they went to Mothership, I was intrigued. Her rave review and evocative photos of creative cocktails instantly made Mothership a mark on my San Diego “must visit” list. One thing I’ve learned about San Diego is that, like Chicago and New York, it’s one of my favorite cities for dining out. So, when the opportunity presented itself for a visit south, I made sure to make a reservation for Mothership via OpenTable.
It was a short ride from the Carte Hotel San Diego Downtown, Curio Collection by Hilton to Mothership. Once inside, I was visually awash in the well designed interior. It was an immersive experience.
I began the night with an order of the STAR RIDER (Navy Strength West Indies Rum, Gold Caribbean Rum, Crème de Banane, Crème de Cassis, Cynar Artichoke Amaro, Lime, Raspberry Grenadine). This was outstandingly crafted and delicious. Especially, when snacking on the POTATO (Scallion Latke, Kimchi Cream Cheese, Everything Furikake, Nasturtium Leaf, Persian Cucumber, Black Radish).
The NOODLE (Hong Kong Noodle Cake, Laksa Broth, Yellow Curry Tofu, Grilled Gai Lan, Roasted Pineapple, Toasted Rice Powder), followed by the CHIPS (Lotus, Taro, Red Beet, Okinawan Purple Sweet Potato, Mole, White Bean Dip) were both delicious to snack on throughout the evening.
But, the star of the evening? The ASTRO ZOMBIE (Aged Nicaraguan Rum, 151 Demerara Rum, Stroh 160 Austrian Run, Amaro Meletti, Grapefruit, Lime, Cinnamon, Cherry Grenadine, Passion Fruit, Absinthe).
There is a reason that there is a limit of 1 per customer for this drink. It is STRONG and it is OUTSTANDING.
We finished up with the DONUT (Delicata Squash, Tempura Batter, Burnt Orange Glaze, Herb Sprinkle). The taste of squash was light and the donut was perfectly crisp.
Mothership delivered on every level, from the innovative cocktails to the unique culinary offerings. It’s rare to find a place where the atmosphere, food, and drinks are all equally memorable, but Mothership truly excelled in all aspects.
