The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin is a stunning botanical garden dedicated to native Texas plants and wildflowers.
While checking out of Hilton Austin, I asked the front desk for suggestions of spots around the city to photograph. One of the friendly agents suggested the Arboretum Cows. After a quick search, it seemed visually interesting.
However, once I arrived, I realized the whole experience was rather extremely underwhelming from a photography perspective. It’s a few cows, a bunch of trees and some outdoor art – in the middle of a shopping center.
After taking some lackluster photos, I realized I didn’t want to leave Austin on a sour, bitter note. Instead, I searched to find someplace visually interesting to visit. I wanted to feel visually fulfilled behind my camera lens, not still annoyed AF over an offhand encounter with a nosy Karen.
Luckily, my intuition had an adventure waiting for me. A short drive later, I found myself wandering through the tranquil pathways of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
As I paid for my entrance, I noticed the late summer sun filtered through the canopy of trees. As I made my way deeper into the gardens, the air was alive with the beauty and quiet magnificent of nature. I felt grounded and a sense of deep inner peace. This was what I’d been searching for.
It was impossible to ignore the butterflies and bees that dance among the flowers. Their delicate wings fluttered in a graceful ballet, as I attempted to capture their beautiful from behind my camera shutter.
There’s a unique peace that envelops you when you’re surrounded by nature. I mean – when you are truly enveloped by it – rather than having it as an offshoot to an outlet shopping center like the Arboretum Cows. The world outside the gates seemed to fade away. However, I repeatedly checked my watch to make sure I was still keeping time. I wasn’t about to miss my airport lounge time or flight over my camera.
Despite the heat of summer, the gardens were bursting with life. There’s something profound about being in a place where the wild beauty of the earth is celebrated and protected. Walking among the wildflowers and native plants, I felt a sense of grounding. It’s moments like these, when the noise of everyday life melts away, that I find clarity and inspiration for my photography.
As I left the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, I realized that it wasn’t just a destination for plant lovers or photographers; the Center is a reminder to pause, to breathe, and to take in the simple, exquisite moments that nature offers us every day.
