Paperboy in Austin is a popular brunch spot known for its inventive, locally sourced dishes served in a stylish yet casual setting.
The only good thing about the absolute disaster night at Comedy Mothership the previous night, was one throwaway line that a comic mentioned about Austin local eatery – Paperboy – during a joke. Clearly, he was referencing the restaurant’s popularity and how challenging it was to get a table. Well, one person’s annoyance is my adventure in taste.
Curious, the next morning, I did my research. Immediately, I was enthralled with the menu. Combined with all the reviews raving about the food but whining about the wait time, and I was all in.
Driving down 11th Street toward East Austin, I was absolutely shocked to see the line at Franklin Barbecue, already wrapped around the corner at 9am. But, that’s the power of good barbecue.
I easily found street parking down from the restaurant. Walking up, I was excited. The architecture and overall vibe of the restaurant was exactly what I was seeking.
Registering my name for a table, I settled outside to wait. I actually didn’t have to wait long – barely 10 minutes, before I was called inside for a table on the patio. Sometimes, it pays to be a table for one, going to breakfast on a weekday.
To start, I ordered the LAVENDER LATTE along with the PEACHES & CREAM ROLL. After hearing rave reviews about the roll, I wanted to travel with it back to California, as a late afternoon treat to share.
I order the CHICKEN & BISCUIT (crispy-fried chicken, country gravy, sunny egg, spicy honey) with potato wedges instead of eggs.
When it arrived, all I could say was “Oh hell yes.” This was everything I wanted it to be. And the taste? Even better than it looked.
Everything, and I mean everything at Paperboy – from the food to the vibe – was excellent.
