Kaaterskill Falls State Park in New York’s Catskill Mountains showcases a stunning view of the two-tiered cascade waterfalls that plunges over 260 feet.
When I was tipped off about Kaaterskill Falls while having a cocktail at The Maker Lounge, I was thrilled to find it so accessible, just a short drive away. After reading up on the falls, I knew it had to be on my must-visit list. The hike and the view looked iconically like what I’d always imagined driving through upstate New York during autumn would be. It truly looked like it captured the essence of the Catskill Mountains and the pleasures of the changing seasons.
So the next day, after visiting Olana State Historic Site in the morning and walking across the Rip Van Wrinkle Bridge afterwards, I set off for an afternoon at Kaaterskill Falls.

As one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in the Catskills, this two-tiered cascade plunges 260 feet, making it one of New York’s tallest. I parked at North South Lake State Campground and thankfully got a spot near the trailhead. Otherwise, I would have had to park at the campground beach and walk back.
The 1.4-mile round-trip hike was short but stunning. I savored each step, capturing photos along the way.

The trees surrounded me in vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows—exactly the autumn beauty I’d hoped to photograph.

At the top of the Kaaterskill Falls overlook, I paused on a rather busy platform. I stood there, soaking in the awe-inspiring view of the falls.

Spending my afternoon here was unforgettable. Kaaterskill Falls truly combines history, beauty, and the wild spirit of the Catskills region in one remarkable place.
