Olana, in Hudson Valley, New York, is a breathtaking estate and National Historic Landmark that was the home of renowned landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church
There is something profound about a hotel concierge that truly understands the area and can offer outstanding suggestions, based on what a guest is looking for. While checking in to The Maker Hotel in Hudson, I had an easy going conversation with the concierge, Johnathon. I asked him for his opinion for different sights to see and photograph in Hudson Valley. After a careful moment of consideration, he gave me some suggestions: the Rip Van Wrinkle Bridge, Art Omi and Bartlett House in Ghent and Olana.
While having a drink at The Maker Lounge before dinner, I decided to do some research on Olana. Built by Frederic Edwin Church, a pivotal figure of the Hudson River School, Olana was his family home, creative inspiration, curated collection of worldly goods and – from the photos – looked incredibly beautiful. So, I booked The Artist’s House: Main Floor tour.
The morning of my tour, driving up to Olana left me in utter awe. The grounds were sweeping and I checked in at the gift shop, was given a printed ticket and walked around part of the grounds before meeting up with my tour group.

At our appointed time, Don, our group guide, greeted our group and began teaching us about Olana and set the stage for showcasing the personal world of an incredible artist.
Once Don opened the doors, I was wowed. Every room and window in Olana tells a story of exploration, culture, and unparalleled creativity.

Each room still held richly upholstered furniture, exotic textiles, and curios from the Church family’s international travels. Don told us the rich history of the family – from heartbreaks to successes. He painted the picture of long, intellectually stimulating evenings that the Church’s would have enjoyed with illuminaries of the day.

The walls are adorned with a curated selection of Church’s personal art collection, including pieces by other renowned artists, as well as his own sketches. Walking through the guided tour, I felt that I was witnessing the natural environment that shaped his masterpieces.
I truly appreciated the art, culture, and the allure of history between the walls and on the grounds of Olana. Plus, it offered a stunning view of the Rip Van Wrinkle Bridge, which I later walked on.

After the docent led tour, I walked around the grounds of the property. It was exquisite.
At Olana, the experience is more than just a tour—it’s an intimate encounter with the world of Frederic Edwin Church. With its breathtaking views and thoughtfully curated interiors, Olana offers an unforgettable escape into the past.
