Jules Bistro

Jules Bistro offers a cozy, Parisian-inspired atmosphere with a menu of classic French dishes in Toronto, Ontario.

When planning my trip to Toronto, I reached out to a few friends who regularly visit. Geneva, who I met at yoga at Modo Yoga; then met up with again in London; and back in Los Angeles again for dinner, is actually from Toronto. So, it was natural that she would give me outstanding recommendations.

One of them was Jules Bistro, a French inspired spot happily close to my hotel for my stay. I made a late night reservation and looked forward to it as my train pulled into Union Station.

After lovely check in at 1 Hotel Toronto, I relaxed a bit before heading out. Now, one thing about Lyfts in Toronto is that they are – a unique batch of drivers. It took longer than expected for me to go the .7 miles. But, I got there safely.

Arriving, I immediately took a seat at the bar and ordered. As I’d arrived right before the kitchen closed, I zero’d into the special of the night. After all, it was 50% off on Wednesday. Plus, I was ravenously hangry.

Settling in, I ordered a NEGRONI (Citadelle gin, Cocchi vermouth, Campari).

Sipping and relaxing into the moments in time, I was in love with the interior design of the space. I struck up a conversation with a local about her life, conversed with one of the bartenders about my visit to Switzerland (he’d grown up there, I’d visited) and just enjoyed the liveliness of the vibe.

When my main course arrived, the CÔTE DE BOEUF (24 oz. AAA grade ribeye served with fries and salad), I think my first words were “Oh shit!”

Now, I knew the size of the plate was large, as a few people around me had order the dish. However, when set before me I felt small in its presence.  I opted to upgrade my salad to the CEASER SALAD (Romaine, bacon, croutons, house Caesar dressing). But, once I sliced my first piece of meat and tasted, I knew I made the right choice. This was exceptional. Now, I knew why Geneva raved about their steak and fries and said it was her favorite item on the menu. It was that damn good.

After only eating breakfast at Locals Only in Rochester, New York that morning, I was much hungrier than I through I was.  I devoured almost everything as more conversations flowed. The locals were extremely friendly, warm and inviting. The conversations ranging from how annoying Québécois are to Toronto, to the best items on the menu, to the absurdity of certain Canadian laws to even hurricanes in Florida.

Plus, I was recommended and tasted this awesome gin: Citadelle from France.

Two hours at the restaurant flew by. As I said goodbye, I felt deeply grateful for Geneva’s spot-on recommendations and the beauty of embracing new experiences—especially those that bring great conversation and delicious food together.
