Broken Compass - Eclectic Kim

Broken Compass Tiki in Burbank could be my favorite Tiki inspired bar and South Pacific restaurant in Los Angeles

On a lovely night, Hilary, Ronnie and I found ourselves at the bar seating at Broken Compass. I was immensely happy they were able to save a seat for me at the bar.

I started with the PIRATE PUNCH (white rum, apricot liqueur, ruby red grapefruit, lime, cinnamon syrup, absinthe) an an order of the absolutely fantastic POKE NACHOS (ahi tuna, cucumber, onion, tomato, sesame, avocado, sriracha, wonton chips).

I continued with the SATURN (gin, housemade orgert, housemade falernum, passionfruit syrup, lemon) as the conversation got deeper into discussing America’s musical history.

My friends got the CAJUN MAC N CHEESE (Crawfish, sausage, giardiniera, crispy okra) and the SHRIMP AND LOBSTER ROLL (lettuce, tomato, Tajin) and it looked absolutely delicious.

They also ordered the PASSION OF THE BOOTY (Rums, passionfruit, guava, lime, falernum, orgeat) and it was so cute! Same with the SCORPION BOWL (Gin, 151 rum, captain’s rum blend, vodka, grenadine, pineapple juice, orange juice, lemon).

Because I love things that are set on fire in front of me, I finished the extended night out with CHUPACABRA’S VACATION (Demerara Rum, Jamaican Rum, Pomegranate Reduction, Cinnamon, Lime Juice, Bitters).

It was a PERFECT way to spend the afternoon and evening, discussing topics of the day and engaging with friends.

On a previous visit to Broken Compass, my friend Erik arrived early for our 6pm meetup time. He was immediately quoted an hour wait.

At 6pm. On a Wednesday.

It’s important to know that Broken Compass does not take reservations and is on a first come, first serve basis for tables. Paddy’s Pub, this was definitely not. Broken Compass is incredibly popular with raving reviews. Thankfully, Erik secured us seats at the bar and we were better for it.

Settling in to the bar, made from an actual ship, I took the bartender’s advice and ordered the THREE DOTS & A DASH (Agricole Rum, Puerto Rican 4 Year Rum, Jamaican Rum, Lime, Orange, Allspice Dram). It was a peak Tiki vibe.

Wanting to sample everything all at once, we ordered the PU PU PLATTER FOR 2 (Aloha Dippers, Sweet & Sour Cauliflower, Kalua Pork, Coconut Shrimp, 8 Spice Guacamole & Chips). This was truly delicious. I couldn’t say my favorite – as every small bite on the plate was delicious.

For my main course of the evening, I wanted the decandance and all the flavors. So, I ordered the POKE NACHOS (Ahi Tuna, Cucumber, Onion, Tomato, Sesame, Avocado, Sriracha, Wonton Chips) with the CHUPACABRA’S VACATION (Demerara Rum, Jamaican Rum, Pomegranate Reduction, Cinnamon, Lime Juice, Bitters).
