n/naka presents an exquisite kaiseki dining experience, where Chef Niki Nakayama masterfully blends traditional Japanese techniques with modern influences in a meticulously curated tasting menu
There are certain places that will forever hold a special place in my heart, not just for their food or ambiance, but for the memories and emotions they carry. During the COVID-19 lockdown, when the world felt uncertain and isolating, many of Los Angeles’ most beloved restaurants adapted by offering takeaway box sets, allowing people to enjoy fine dining from the safety of their homes. Among these, n/naka, a celebrated kaiseki restaurant in Culver City, became a beacon of comfort and joy for me during those challenging times.
I vividly remember the ritual of driving to Culver City to pick up my meticulously prepared bento box from n/naka. After checking in and picking up my order, I would drive to Santa Monica, just to escape the confines of my home and reclaim a small sense of normalcy.

Those moments, sitting in my car or by the beach, savoring each beautifully crafted dish, were a lifeline during a period when I felt utterly drained and unsure of what the future held. The takeaway experience from n/naka became a bright spot in my life, a reminder that even in the darkest times, there could still be moments of beauty and connection.
Johann and I often talked about how much we longed to experience n/naka together, in person, once the world reopened. We made a promise to each other that we would dine there formally, as a celebration of making it through the lockdown. It took us two years, but we finally secured a reservation for two.
The evening we walked into n/naka felt like a milestone, not just for the meal we were about to enjoy, but for the journey we had taken to get there.

The experience was nothing short of magical. Chef Niki Nakayama herself came out to greet us, expressing her gratitude for our reservation and patronage. Her warmth and humility set the tone for the evening.
The service was impeccable, every detail thoughtfully curated to create an atmosphere of elegance and care. Each dish that arrived at our table was a masterpiece, a harmonious blend of flavors and textures that left us in pleasure.

To the best of our memories, we didn’t receive a menu to take home. Instead, what we did carry with us were the incredible memories of that night. Our conversations, laughter, and the shared joy of being present in the moment.
And of course – the photographs.

Dining at n/naka was a celebration of life, resilience, and the simple yet profound pleasure of sharing good food with someone you know appreciates it at the same level that you do.

It was a reminder that even in the most challenging times, there are places and experiences that can restore your spirit and remind you of the beauty that exists in the world.
For that, I will always be grateful to n/naka. Not just for their incredible food. But, for the light they brought into my life during a time when I needed it most.
