Mayrose Restaurant

Mayrose Restaurant is a warm, design-forward Portland hotel restaurant serving approachable American classics

After a restful stay at The Duniway Portland, a Hilton Hotel, I woke up with a singular mission: find a proper biscuit. With my favorite old haunts like Tasty and Sons long shuttered and a morning flight looming, I narrowed my search and landed on Mayrose Restaurant.

I ordered the BISCUIT SLIDERS (2 buttermilk biscuits, bacon, cheddar, spicy mayo, scrambled cage-free eggs. arugula & cherry tomato). I customized it by removing the cheese and swapping the eggs for avocado.

And of course, the best part of breakfast in Portland is coffee. So, I had a cup of CAPPUCCINO, leaning into the high coffee standards Portland shares with Seattle and San Francisco.

Unfortunately, the biscuits themselves didn’t live up to the city’s reputation. I mean, Denver Biscuit Company in Denver does it right. Same with Biscuit & Bean in Seattle. Even in Austin, Bird Bird Biscuit is fantastic with biscuits. With all the recipes in the world, the Mayrose Restaurant served the most underwhelming dry ass pucks I’ve made myself eat.

While I managed to finish them with a little help from butter and syrup, the kitchen would be better served offering a traditional sausage gravy side on the menu.

Ideally, my schedule would have allowed for a visit to Flattop & Salamander. But, their later opening time didn’t mesh with my flight.

Ultimately, I got what I asked for, finished my breakfast, and caught my Lyft to Portland International Airport.

Later, while in Nevada, I finally stopped at Pine State Biscuits – Reno. All I can say is wow. I don’t subscribe to the idea that a place becomes “inauthentic” just because it has multiple locations; when something is this good, it simply doesn’t matter. Now I’m already looking forward to returning to Portland for a slow morning spent enjoying biscuits that, frankly, outshine those at Mayrose Restaurant.
