I kicked off the first day of 2022 with a lovely coastal bike ride, with Leanne, through the peaceful beachside paths of Ventura County. The chill morning air and easy ride provided the perfect backdrop for an experience that was equal parts invigorating and serene. It felt like the ideal way to set the tone for a fresh new year—active, joyful, and shared with a great friend.

The day only got better as it transitioned into an unforgettable evening. I wrapped it up with a delightful dinner with Manuel at Laurel Hardware in West Hollywood.

From the outside, its simple, understated façade gave no indication of the vibe within. Stepping through the doors was like discovering a hidden treasure—a stylish and vibrant dining area that opened into a gorgeous outdoor patio, illuminated by soft lights and buzzing with energy. The atmosphere struck the perfect balance between trendy and welcoming.

As we clinked our cocktail glasses in a celebratory toast, I couldn’t help but feel deeply grateful for starting the year with such a wonderful experience.

The CRISPY SHRIMP (shishito, picked tomatillo, toasted pepitas), was a standout—a delightful combination of textures and flavors that had me savoring every bite.

The FRIES, golden and perfectly seasoned, complemented the STEAK FILET, which was tender, juicy, and cooked to perfection.

What made the evening truly special, though, was the conversation. Over the course of the meal, Manuel and I dived into fascinating discussions about Tokyo Godfathers, the 2003 Japanese animated masterpiece by Satoshi Kon, exploring its themes of humanity, redemption, and chance. Manuel also shared his thoughts on Tom Robbins’ novel Jitterbug Perfume, marveling at its intricate storytelling, quirky humor, and profound musings on immortality and scent. The exchange was lively, stimulating, and filled with moments of mutual discovery.

As the night unfolded, I was struck by how lucky I was to share it with someone so uniquely insightful and engaging. It was the kind of evening that leaves a lasting impression, a beautiful blend of great food, thought-provoking conversation, and heartfelt connection.

Starting 2022 this way felt like a promise of more meaningful, enriching moments to come—a beginning as bright and hopeful as I could have imagined.
