Laurel Grill

Laurel Grill in Culver City is a refined American grill and cocktail spot offering elevated dishes in a mid-century modern dining room with an open kitchen

There are some places that I only like to reserve for the very best and dearest friends. So, when my facialist Stephany recommended Laurel Grill during a treatment session, I trusted her opinion enough to put it on my “to try” list. So, when one of my best friends – Ted – was able to squeeze in a dinner with me along his busy schedule of being a doctor, I immediately suggested Laurel Grill. He agreed and a date and reservation soon followed.

Meeting Ted at The Culver Steps complex was easy. Finding Laurel Grill? Took a bit more discovery. After questioning a very nice security guard on where the restaurant was, we took an elevator to the second floor. There, we found Laurel Grill – along with a stunning sunset over Los Angeles.

Settling in, we were both very impressed by the decor – and the menu.

Looking at the cocktails, I immediately ordered a NEGRONI LOS ANGELES (Gray Whale Gin, pineapple, Campari, sweet vermouth). I ordered it in a martini glass – straight up, as I’m a bit over being served drinks with giant ice cubes. What can I say – I’m a martini gal.

We started with the HAMACHI CRUDO (Ponzu, daikon sprout, avocado, Fresno Chile). The ponzu with the hamachi was a lesson in layers of flavors and freshness.

The boiled WONTONS (Chicken & mushrooms Five spice peanut chili sauce, ginger, cilantro) were savory and flavorful.

To go with the rest of the evening, I ordered the INVERTED VESPER (Aspen Vodka, Roku gin, Lillet Blanc, elderflower, grapefruit oil). This was the crisp and clean cocktail of my dreams.

We absolutely loved the handmade pasta, selecting the LEMON (Fettuccini, Meyer lemon, black pepper, arugula) for our carb overload of the evening.

During dinner, our server came to us and switched out my cocktail for a newer, more chilled glass. It was exceptional.

The KUROBUTA PORK CHOP (Hoisin sauce, five spice glaze, served with chilled sesame noodle) was grilled so perfectly, that Ted said it was one of the best pork chops he’s ever had. I delighted in the contrast of the noodles. It was an unusual balance. However, the Asian influence connected both of them – eloquently. It was top tier. Especially, with our side of Fries.

Because Ted and I wanted to linger just a bit longer, we both ordered a latte coffees. Even that was excellent as I sipped and savored my cup to the final conversation of dinner.

Truly, I cannot fathom the reality that it's been 31 years of friendship with one of my dearest best friend. Through honest revelations, tears and break throughs, I came out changed. Life is better when you have the backdrop of wonderful food to allow the comforts of conversation to water your soul.
