My recent adventure through Lower Antelope Canyon, guided by the knowledgeable Anna from Ken’s Tours, was a captivating exploration of one of nature’s most exquisite creations. Owned by a family with deep roots in the area, Ken’s Tours not only showcases the stunning beauty of the canyon – but also offers a unique glimpse into the life and history of the Navajo people who have lived on the land.

As we descended into the canyon, Anna shared intriguing insights about the remote lifestyle of the Navajo. Living so far from the conveniences of larger cities like Phoenix comes with its own set of challenges. But, she also remarked on how the area’s breathtaking beauty and sense of community brings its own immense rewards.

A fun fact I learned is that Ken’s Tours and Dixie’s tours next door are owned by two members of the same family. Each goes into the same slot canyon, in 15 minute increments.

Anna also recounted the historical significance of the canyon, touching upon the government policies that historically isolated the Navajo from their water supply when they were placed on the reservation.

It was a poignant reminder of the complex relationship between the land and its people, underscoring the beauty and depth of the stories held within these sandstone walls.

Having relished a hearty lunch earlier that day, I had considered extending my adventures to include Antelope Canyon X by Taadidiin Tours, but ultimately decided against it. Three hours in another part of the canyon – while enticing – felt best for another trip.

I left the canyon enriched by Anna’s stories and the stunning scenery, ready to continue my journey back toward Las Vegas, knowing that this adventure would remain a highlight of my travels through the American Southwest.
