Forman's Whiskey Tavern in Toluca Lake combines a warm, rustic atmosphere with an impressive whiskey selection
There’s something sold and fulfilling about meeting up with friends for conversation and whiskey. When a scheduled photo shoot didn’t go as planned for Sefora and her friend Danielle, I suggested that we meet up at Forman’s Whiskey Tavern in Toluca Lake for a late lunch. I’d been to Forman’s Whiskey Tavern a few times, years prior. The cozy, dimly lit aesthetic was on point for what I truly wanted – to introduce them to the Valley in a meaningful and fun way.

With sunlight streaming in, I feel in love with Forman’s once again. It was just as I’d remembered it – gorgeous, rich, upscaled drinking excellence.

The bar was lined with a dazzling array of bottles. But, there were only a few bottles that immediately caught my eye: the selection of Pappy at the center of the bar.
I asked for the prices. The 10 year was $32, the 12 year was $42, the 15 year was $72 and the 20 year was $122. Together, it would be a $268 tasting for all four. So, I decided to invest in my pleasure and ordered a single ounce pour of the VAN WINKLE 12 YR LOT “B” 90.4 (dried mango, cocoa, peach, honey, tobacco).

Now, I’d previously had a pour of the 15 year Pappy Van Winkle at Youngblood in San Diego. But, honestly – the first sip of the 12 year the first sip was exactly what I expected from a $800 bottle of bourbon whiskey. I’ve also savored and enjoyed glasses of $5,000 per bottle Liber Pater wines … But, I digress.
Sitting down, I took photos of my prize before diving in. The tasting notes danced across my palate in waves. Smooth and elegant, it was the kind of whiskey that made me pause and savor every drop. It was slightly sweet with smooth notes of peach and honey. It was everything I desired.
To complement the bourbon, I also ordered the HICKORY BURGER (hickory sauce, bacon & onion compote, smoked cheddar, shredded lettuce) with SEASONED FRIES.
Fancy AF bourbon with a burger and fries?
Yes.
The hickory sauce had a perfect blend of smoky sweetness in every bite. The bacon and onion compote was caramelized to perfection, adding a savory richness that elevated the entire experience. It was – very nice.
The seasoned fries were fried very well done, which I appreciated. I also appreciated my server getting a small cup of ranch, when I asked.
But, the real joy of the afternoon truly came from the company. Seeing Sefora and meeting Danielle made my afternoon. Between bites of burgers and sips of bourbon, we laughed, took fun videos, made travel plans and just had fun. Even better? I absolutely devoured the burger.
As we parted ways, I was extremely appreciative of picking just the right spot for such an enjoyable time. I couldn’t help but feel grateful. First, for the exceptional food and drink, for the laughter that filled the evening, and most of all, for the kind of friendship that turns an ordinary Thursday into something unforgettable.
Cheers to good bourbon, solid food, and even better friends.
