When William invited me to the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines (Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines: Watching PGA Tour Golf from Suite 16), I decided to turn the event into an overnight stay. Having explored various San Diego neighborhoods in the past, I wanted to try somewhere new that offered easy access to Starlite. After a quick search, I settled on The Monsaraz San Diego, Tapestry Collection by Hilton.

Check In
The arrival experience was seamless; I found convenient parking along Harbor Drive and was immediately struck by the hotel’s inviting aesthetic. The check-in team was exceptionally friendly, setting a positive tone for the stay.

Room + Stay
The room itself was a stylish blend of nautical charm and Italian-inspired accents, featuring a beautiful palette of blues, warm woods, and crisp white details. I particularly enjoyed the cute look of the balcony that offered a relaxing view over the central courtyard.

There were some obvious issues that needed fixing in the bathroom. But, that didn’t initially detract from my initial impressions that much.

However, the stay wasn’t without its hiccups. After returning from an evening at North Park Beer Company, I discovered the heater in my room was malfunctioning. While the staff was responsive – providing an extra blanket and attempting a system reset – it was undeniably frustrating to be without a working heater during a hotel stay.
So, returning to my room after dinner at Starlite, I packed my things and headed to the front desk. It was frustratingly close to midnight and I just wanted to sleep without the distraction of being cold. So, the front desk agent walked me to two different rooms, with the second room having a fully working heater. It was clearly blowing when we entered and I was finally able to relax and sleep.
Overall
Ultimately, while the design at The Monsaraz San Diego, Tapestry Collection by Hilton was a high point, the climate control issue kept the experience in the “fine” rather than exceptional category. Plus, breakfast at Unico’s at The Monsaraz San Diego was extremely high for what you actually receive.
That said, if I were heading back to Point Loma Sportfishing, I’d definitely consider staying here again for its convenience before an early morning departure. It may not offer the high-end luxury of the InterContinental San Diego or the Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas, but it doesn’t need to. It serves its purpose well as a stylish, accessible stay with reliable street parking in the heart of Point Loma.
