Eclectic Kim Review: Yunomi Handroll

After a long day packed with meetings, code reviews, and a site walkthrough, I was absolutely starving. I’d ordered delivery from Yunomi Handroll’s downtown location before while working out of Groundfloor Echo Park, but since their Toluca Lake spot was right along my route to Feybl, it felt like the perfect chance to stop in for lunch.

The restaurant sits on Riverside – where refreshingly, easy parking is abound. After parking, stepped out into the cooler autumn air and enjoyed the short walk to the entrance.

When I opened the door to the restaurant, to say that I was impressed would be an understatement. The space was sleek, modern, and beautifully designed. With only bar seating available, I settled into my spot and actually appreciated the intimacy it created.

Browsing the menu, I was shocked by how much I’d under estimated my hunger. Instead of overindulging, I decided to trust my instincts and order just enough to satisfy without going overboard.

I began with the SEAWEED SALAD (sunomono, kaiso, chuka, ponzu, tosa-zu). This was cool and refreshing on the tongue.

Next came the ROCK SHRIMP TEMPURA (rock shrimp tempura tossed in house spicy mayo seasoned with shichimi togarashi and finished with chives). This was absolutely delicious. I didn’t expect it to be the secret heavy hitter for lunch.

But, what I really appreciated was the FOUR HANDROLL SET (tuna, albacore, salmon, shrimp tempura). I ordered each of them “spicy” and every bite was perfectly balanced, flavorful and exactly what I craved

By the end of the meal, I felt deeply grateful that I’d listened to my intuition. It reminded me how comforting an easy going meal can be. And that I have to remember to give myself permission to enjoy simple pleasures more vs excessively working.
