The Butcher’s Daughter

The Butcher’s Daughter in West Hollywood is a plant-forward restaurant and juice bar on Melrose Ave, serving an all-day vegetarian menu

Some people don’t just pass through your life – they reshape it. James is one of those people. Every time we’re together, I leave feeling different and expanded.

For this particular afternoon, James chose The Butcher’s Daughter in West Hollywood. As I walked in, I noticed the stunning decor. It was designed perfectly – to make a statement even before the food arrived.

Settling in, I ordered the WATER FLOWER (watermelon, fennel, honeydew, lime, lavender) to start. When it arrived, I immediately felt that It was made to order. Each sip felt almost medicinal in the best way, like my body was pulling it in immediately. It felt hydrating.

The SPICY KALE CAESAR (crispy shallots, toasted almonds, avocado, almond, parmesan, breadcrumbs, harissa dressing) was absolutely beautiful.

What wasn’t beautiful: the vegan “bacon.” It had the texture and character of smoked transparent paper, thin and flavorless in the worst possible way. James and I each tried a piece, exchanged a look – a confused laugh – and that was that. I sent the dish back after our server checked in on us and I gave her an honest answer.

The Butcher’s Daughter holds its own as one of the more distinctive spots on Melrose. The interior alone justifies the trip for a weekend brunch with friends. As we lingered over lunch and James talked about his upcoming retreat in France with Kim Larkin, I felt that particular kind of inspiration that only certain conversations can produce.

I am truly thankful that the connections I have now are the ones I once only imagined: people who are luminous, curious, and worth sitting across from over a good meal.

That – more than anything – is what makes my life feel full.
