There is something to be said about the saying that “absence makes the heart grow fonder.” It had been a few months since I’d seen Leanne. This, after a period when I would see her once a week for biking or coffee and conversation. But, time effortlessly moves on into the future. And the best thing about certain friendships is that you can pick up right where you left off.
When she suggested we meet up over brunch and coffee at Sweetsalt Food Shop, I was more than excited. But when I pulled into the parking lot in the back at their new location, I was shocked.
They’d clearly moved from their former, smaller location. And wow, what a difference it had made!

Entering, I absolutely loved what Sweetsalt Food Shop had become. They’d clearly moved down the street on Riverside and were still in Toluca Lake. But, after taking over the former Honeybaked Ham location, Sweetsalt Food Shop had expanded into a breakfast, lunch and dinner destination. Complete with a wine cellar and pizza oven!

I started with a hot cup of COFFEE, with beans roasted by Groundwork Coffee.
After browsing the menu, I also ordered the FIG & PROSCIUTTO (24 month aged prosciutto, balsamic, herbed goat cheese, baguette) alongside a side of the LAVENDER SEASONED FRENCH FRIES.

Now, I will say that the fries do not particularly taste like lavender. I think it’s more of an imagined wisp of a feeling. I admit that I was amused and curious by the description on the menu. But, to me – they still just taste like delicious fries.
With good food, interesting conversation and great coffee, my time at Sweetsalt Food Shop was the perfect start to what led to a rather delicious and creatively fulfilling day.
