There are some people who enter my life and fill it with all the colors of the rainbow of creativity. That’s how I feel about Janisse, after meeting her at the local ceramics studio, Green and Bisque. Like my friend Matt – who later moved to Rochester, New York, conversing with Janisse over lunches and dinners has been a delight.
For this night, we popped into Sushi Note in Sherman Oaks.

I started with a glass of the 2020 Rovellotti ‘Valplazza’ from the Ghemme DOCG in Alto Piedmont, Italy.

Janisse and I both ordered the Half Note for dinner. It offered the perfect balance of taste – without being overwhelming to eat.

We began with the miso soup (green onion, tofu, dashi) and the Kuro Edamame (sea salt) along with a side of shishito peppers. This went perfectly with our welcome splashes of sparkling rose.

First 3 Sushi Selections: Madai (sea bream from Japan – with sea salt and yuzu); Akami (lean bluefin tuna from Spain with soy sauce); Itoyori (golden threadfin bream from Japan with grated daikon, chili, green onion and ponzu sauce).

Second Selections: SHIOKKO (baby amberjack with soy sauce); Hotate (scallop from Japan with lemon and truffle sea salt); TORO SAWARA (king mackerel with soy sauce and minced ginger).
I loved it so much, I forgot to capture an image of it, before I devoured it.
To finish out dinner, we each had a negihama hand roll (Japanese yellowtail, green onion).

For dessert, we had half glasses of the 2021 Domaine Castera ‘Jurancon Sec’ from Jurançon, France.

We also shared the mandarin ginger and fresh mint Sorbet with the milk+ honey gelato with yuzu marmalade.

With conversation that matched the beauty of the meal, it was truly a special night of happiness.
