Mammoth Brewing Company

Mammoth Brewing Company offers drinkable beers, casual food, and a laid-back atmosphere in Mammoth Lakes, California

Mammoth Brewing Company had been on my list of places to try in Mammoth Lakes, for a few visits. But, every time, my schedule had led me to other places to eat and chill.

However, it was after meeting Jim, a fellow bar patron working on his computer on my first night at Limelight Mammoth, that I actually could fit it into my plans. We’d made plans on meeting at Mammoth Brewing Company and co-working together for an hour, while exchanging light conversation.

As I’d checked out of Limelight Mammoth a bit earlier than he would arrive, I quickly made my way inside to sit and chill. After reviewing the two screens of beer selection, I knew there was only one choice to be had: trying them all. After all, my only to do item at the end of the day was to drive back to Los Angeles. So, as I decided to stay in Mammoth and write for a few hours, I order a flight of Originals.

  • Golden Trout Kölsch (4.8% – light and crisp Kölsch style beer named after the elusive California State Fish) This was an easy drinking, true to the style beer.
  • Mammoth Pilsner  (5.0% – we present to you our crisp, easy-drinking Mammoth Czech-Style Pilsner) It might be my palate but this is a beer that reminded me of drinking hop water. Again, it’s just because I enjoy bolder flavors. This is a beer that you could easily order and drink all day.
  • Yosemite Pale Ale (5.5% – a medium bodied, hop-forward beer with a golden-straw color) This is where things began to get interesting. I really enjoyed the hop forward nature of this easy drinking beer. If I were to come back and just get something that I could easily drink while playing on my phone – post run on the mountain – it would be this beer.
  • Double Nut Brown (5.5% – rich in flavor with aromas and flavors of coffee, chocolate, and a little toffee-nutty character) This was a truly nice and refreshing nut brown. Upon tasting, I felt that it had the same easy drinking characteristics as the previous three. But, with an added complexity in rich, nutty flavor.
  • Epic IPA (6.5% – A full bodied West Coast Style IPA with a light golden color) Again, this was true to the style and fine – but not one that I would straight out order a pint of.
  • IPA 395 (8.0% – this IPA has Desert Sage and Juniper berries added to it to offer a unique taste to compliment a malty body and an earthy, citrusy, and floral hop profile) Again, this was fine. In my opinion, this would be another choice that I would consider coming back for and drinking.
  • Mammoth Imperial Root Beer (Non-Alcoholic – Brewed with sarsaparilla, birch, golden cane sugar, molasses, raisins and maple syrup) This was absolutely delicious. In short, this was a good, clean, delicious house made root beer.

Soon, Jim arrived for our co-working session. It was a random, lovely, impromptu situation that I greatly appreciated. I love meeting new people with great vibes. And writing about my experiences in Mammoth while passively conversing with someone else who was working seemed like the right fit for an hour.

I tried some of Jim’s (ha!) Jim’s Bang n’ Shrimp (crispy shrimp tossed in spicy sriracha mayo, lime, cilantro, green onion, sesame seeds) and greatly enjoyed it. It was a solid offering until my lunch arrived.

With this, I moved on to the Specialties Beer Flight.

  • The Mill (4.9% – Mexican Lager) This was delicious and distinctive. I really enjoyed the citrus twang of the lager.
  • Real McCoy (5.5% – Amber Ale) Solid, easy drinking.
  • Hop Spill Hazy  (IPA • 6.9% – IPA) Again, another easy drinking hazy.
  • El Capitan (8.5%- West Coast DIPA) For this beer, I greatly enjoyed the slightly fruity and hoppy finish.
  • Elderberry Sour (5.5% – Fruited) This was okay. It’s an easy drinking sour and great for someone who’s looking for a little taste of fruit in their beer.
  • Lair of the Bear (12.5% – Russian Imperial Stout) ……. it was brewed and I drank it.

My plate of The Golden Fish and Chips (Golden Trout Kölsch battered cod fillets, russet waffle fries, slaw, spicy remoulade, lemon, malt vinegar) was a solid accompaniment.

Overall, Mammoth Brewing Company is not Russian River Brewing and I wouldn’t make a beer pilgrimage here like I did for Pliny the Younger 2025: Guided Tour & Tasting at Russian River Brewing. It’s even distinctly different than Distant Brewing, on Old Mammoth Road.

But, does it serve up drinkable beer with a chill vibe –  right on the main street of Mammoth Lakes?

Absolutely.
