Bullocks Bistro

Bullocks Bistro is a legendary Yellowknife seafood restaurant serving ultra-fresh Arctic fish in a casual, no-frills setting

There’s one spot in Yellowknife that locals and visitors alike rave about when it comes to legendary fish and chips: Bullocks Bistro. So, after picking up a much-needed merino wool base layer from Overlander Sports, Amanda and I hailed a taxi and made our way to Bullocks. When it’s -20°C outside, taxis aren’t a luxury, they’re survival.

Now, here’s the thing about Bullocks: a long wait is expected. It’s about an hour and a half.  At one point during our wait, I wandered off for a short walk across the frozen, snow-covered surface of Great Slave Lake.

Amanda and I waited outside for about 45 minutes before we were pushed our way to crowd into the warm, bustling interior. Inside, I quickly realized: one cook, one server, and a dining room full of 34 steated people. It was chaotic, but in a strangely beautiful, orchestrated way.

The lone server ran the room like a symphony conductor. She rang up orders, seated guests, assigned tables, all with impressive command. After about an hour and a half of standing and shuffling, Amanda and I finally landed seats at a shared table.

I ordered the Great Slave Cod, served Fried with a bottle of Strongbow Apple Cider.

I also had some of Amanda’s Grilled Arctic Char. Which was great.

Afterward, we walked across the street to Weaver and Devore Trading Ltd and I bought the Canada Goose jacket I had my eye on for a month.

Overall, it was a beautiful time in Yellowknife. Because, you have nothing to do. Literally nothing. And it’s a vibe that I greatly appreciated.
