Ever since Blue Whale Bar in Little Tokyo closed, I was in desperate need for live music in Los Angeles. Verse is beautiful - but there was something special about Blue Whale Bar.
So, when I heard that Blue Note was opening a new venue in Los Angeles, I became excited. When they announced their upcoming slate of performances, there was only one name that truly stood out: Killer Mike.
Arriving for the performance, I was taken by the beautiful, intimate and yet open design. It felt like it gave me a slice of New York – in Los Angeles.

Wonderfully, my partner and I were seated in a beautiful seat in front of the stage. As our server arrived, I ordered a cocktail to start. The SMOKING ON THE BACK PORCH (Woodenville Bourbon, black tea-honey syrup, peach & Angostura Bitters, smoked) took so long to arrive, that I also received a complimentary PASSION OF THE 75 (Ketel One, passionfruit, lemon, topped with Prosecco).

The SPICY VALENCIA ALMONDS (toasted and dusted with smoky Aleppo-style chili) were fine.

My dinner, the SALMON (honey soy glaze, mashed potatoes, sauteed broccoli rabe) was great.

The MEYER LEMON PANNA COTTA (butter crumber, olive oil) was also fine.

I mean, the real reason I was there was to see Killer Mike perform songs from his album – Micheal – and to enjoy the energy of live music.

In the end, a small hiccup with the bill couldn’t overshadow the real joy of the night – experiencing Killer Mike’s music live and feeling that rare spark that only great performances can bring.
