It is one thing to discover a restaurant during a late night search in Los Angeles, but it is another entirely to find yourself in that very spot, completely enamored with the reality of it. Sitting at a corner window at Alaska Chopped & Chowdered, with a snowy landscape framed just beyond my view, I felt a powerful sense of alignment. It as perfect for a special night out in Anchorage.
First, my glass of wine for the evening. I was looking for a wine with a particular flavor, and TAPESTRY Winery’s Red Blend from Pasa Robles, California was it for me.
Browsing the menu, I was instantly focused on the Chowder Flight (Sample any 3 chowders w/ a 3oz portion served on a flight board). Immediately, I set upon deciding on what to savor.
The Alaskan Rustic Clam Chowder (clams, potatoes, onions, celery & thick sweet cream); Manhattan Clam Chowder (tomato-based, potatoes, clams, vegetables); and Sea Harvest Chowder (Lobster, Scallops, Clams, Shrimp, Salmon & Halibut, potatoes).
Each spoonful felt like a soul warming revelation. As a die hard chowder lover, I found these to be among the best I have ever experienced.
For my main course, the 6oz Filet Mignon (a smaller, elegant cut, grilled to preserve its exquisite tenderness and delicate flavor) with Steak Butter – Italian Herbs & Garlic and Creamy Horseradish was also tastefully done.
As we shared the extra delicious Seasoned Frites, I was extremely happy that I found Alaska Chopped & Chowdered during my late night search.
The evening concluded on a high note as our waitress brought out a “fat boy” ice cream sandwich for Onnik. As I sang “Happy Birthday” to him, I knew he felt the care I’d put into curating a weekend that truly reflected my appreciation for him.
My late-night discovery had translated into a flawlessly executed reality.
