Pennyroyal Farm

Pennyroyal Farm in Boonville crafts sustainable wines and cheeses, offering tastings and tours in a picturesque Anderson Valley setting

After conversing with Jason McConnell at Anderson Valley Brewing Company, there was only one spot left on my “to visit” list for the area. Pennyroyal Farm – alongside Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company – were recommended to me during my visit to MacRostie Winery and Moshin Winery. So, as I’d visited Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company during a previous trip – it was delightfully time for a stop at Pennyroyal Farm.

Greeting my host – Christina Giannelli – I was taken by the absolute beauty of the design. As I’d had more than enough wine for my trip, I chose to partake in the cheese tasting.

PENNYROYAL FARM: TASTE OF PLACE

Laychee
Flavored Laychee
Bollie’s Mollies
Log Lifter
Boont Corners Two Month
Velvet Sister
Boont Corners Vintage
Boont Corners Reserve
Fratty Corners
Boonter’s Blue

Each taste was absolutely delicious. My favorites were the Flavored Laychee, Fratty Corners and the Boonter’s Blue. I truly wished I had time to relax and enjoy the wines and cheese outside in the sun. But, standing at the counter was just as fulfilling and delicious.

When I reached my final tasting – the Boonter’s Blue – Christina poured me a small splash of the 2023 Muscat Vin Doolsey from Anderson Valley. It was transformative. The wine and cheese together created a moment of pure harmony, a perfect ending to a beautiful weekend in Northern California.

What I loved most about my visit to Pennyroyal Farm wasn’t just the cheese or the wine, but the genuine sense of community. As I was paying, Christina struck up a warm conversation with a local who had stopped by to pick up her order. Their easy exchange of life updates felt natural and familiar. The woman enthusiastically began raving about Christina’s music show – Mendo Blendo – on KZYX, Mendocino County’s Public Broadcasting station.

As I left Pennyroyal Farm to head back to San Francisco Airport, I couldn’t help but feel that this stop – marked by good cheese, genuine conversation, and a shared love of place – captured something profoundly special for me.
