While driving from yet another outstanding facial with Stephany of Flowrbombr Skincare to Groundfloor Echo Park to write, I had a thought – what If I made a stop to Daybird for a delicious Szechuan infused chicken sandwich.

It was easy to find parking in their underground parking structure. Before I knew it, I was back at Daybird and ordering one of the only sandwiches in Los Angeles that never lets me down: the SZECHUAN HOT Chicken Sandwich (Medium Spice – Jidori chicken thigh fried in rice bran oil, slaw) with FRIES, PICKLES and Habanero Ranch.
As I drove to Groundfloor Echo Park, it was everything I could do to not eat the fries. Seriously, they taste like the best fries in Los Angeles. At least, the fries at Daybird are in the top three.
Once I arrived at Groundfloor, I pretty much devoured the dish before taking a photo of it. It was that damn good.

It had been literal years since I’d seen Justine. It’s so strange to be living in the same city as a friend – yet not see them in years due to time, schedules and life itself.
So, when our schedules finally lined up, I eagerly suggested that we get food to go at Daybird and head to Groundfloor for conversation and connection.
Coming back to Daybird in a post COVID world was an interesting feeling. It was so nice to order inside and really feel the vibe of Chef Mei Lin’s culinary creation.

I noticed a sign that said “Win a game of rock, paper scissors for a single order of fries rules – if there’s a tie the winner is the Daybird team.” So, I tried my luck.

I promptly lost, as we both chose rock. Which was a bummer. But, at least I tried.
I ordered the HOT COD SANDO (Brined East Coast Cod breaded and fried w/ Yuzu Tartar Sauce), a TENDER (medium) and FRIES, PICKLES, DAYBIRD SAUCE with HOT HONEY to go with my selections.
We met again at Groundfloor with our orders. I pulled out my chilled bottle of Lofi Wines’ 2020 Sparkling Chenin Blanc, from my recent trip to Lofi Wines tasting room.
I love it when a great plan comes together.

The cool, crisp sparkle of the wine went perfectly with the hot, flavorful meal.
However, I would say that my order of the fish sandwich was a one and done deal for me.
Next time, I’ll stick to the chicken sando that I love. The fish sandwich just does not compare – at all.
I mean look at my photos of the chicken sandwich – it’s perfection.

These photos are from a previous visit to Daybird.
My mouth waters just looking at them. The giant, well battered chicken overflows the bun. Making you feel that you’re getting a two for one special – a pre sandwich chicken tender before getting to the main part.
It’s simply delicious, juicy, chicken perfection. *sigh*
Most importantly, I’m happy that I was able to spend a few hours in the afternoon with someone I truly wish I could see more of in my life. We ended with coffee and baklava from Mashti Malone’s, one of Justine’s favorite dessert spots.

Friends, really good friends from college, are really good to have. Even when you just see them once every few years for a chicken sandwich, a glass of wine and a conversation.
