When a friend gives me a “no-questions-asked” travel recommendation, I listen. So, when Amanda insisted I visit Whisky & Ramen during my trip to Anchorage, I made it a priority. Stepping inside, the interior design was so stunning it demanded a double-take. It felt like a hidden gem I’d expect in a global design capital or in Echo Park in Los Angeles. Yet here it was in the heart of Alaska.

As Onnik and I settled into our seats, I took great pleasure in browsing the menu. Their full whisky menu was extensive and beautiful to see.

To start the evening, I ordered the MEDEINA’S GROTTO (Shiso, Key Lime, Aqua Perfecta, Fontebonne, Lemongrass Aromatic). I loved the playful smoke bubble that topped and then popped on my martini glass. It was clever and well balanced.

The WHISKY PORK BUNS (Japanese whisky-miso crisped pulled pork, rice flour steamed buns with lightly pickled cucumber, candied fresno chili, micro cilantro, okonomi sauce) were absolutely delicious.

Onnik also enjoyed his SCOTCH TAMAGO (ramen egg, ginger, garlic, chili pork, panko, lemon, Japanese mustard aioli).
THE DARK HORSE (spicy “burnt” miso pork broth, wavy tokyo style noodle, whisky-miso crisped, pulled pork, shiitake mushroom ragu, charred corn, hot rayu – no 6.5 minute egg) was some of the absolute best ramen I’ve ever had.

With this, I enjoyed THE FLOWERS OF EDO (Sesame Washed Overholt Bonded Rye, Honey Ginger Syrup, Orange Bitters, Smoked Ume Oolong). With this drink, I experienced the delights of table side smoked ice.

With every sip of the cocktail, the aromatics of the woody scent from the ice added complexity to the drink. The sesame wash added a distinct dimension as well. It was, quite simply, some of the best ramen I’ve ever had – leaving me genuinely annoyed that the restaurant didn’t exist back home.
What truly defined the experience was the staff. Tyler spoke with me about fishing and Native politics, sharing his journey from Texas to Colorado to Oregon before settling in Alaska. Derek, a Fairbanks native, enthralled us with travel stories and his reasons for staying in Alaska. Their warmth turned a great meal into a memorable connection.

Overall, dinner at Whisky & Ramen was an absolute pleasure. As we walked back to The Wildbirch Hotel - JDV by Hyatt, I felt true gratitude.

There is an immense beauty in having friends who point you toward excellence, no matter where in the world you find yourself. It truly makes the world feel like home.
