The Fat Boy Seafood

Sipping tableside margaritas with sand between my toes made lunch at Bucerías’s beachfront Fat Boy Seafood pure perfection

There are certain coastal experiences in Mexico that feel essential – like stepping beyond your hotel grounds to discover the personality and rhythm of the surrounding towns. During my stay at Haramara Retreat for Joe Kara’s yoga retreat, I fell in love with the energy of the area. I walked the streets of Sayulita and took a taxi to the more relaxed village of San Pancho (also known as San Francisco). Each town offered a different glimpse into the soul of Riviera Nayarit. It felt full of charm, color and oozed laid-back coastal life.

So when I found myself in Punta de Mita, I knew I wanted to explore somewhere new. I turned to the concierge at the Conrad Punta de Mita, whose team was not only friendly but also incredibly knowledgeable. After considering a few options, one staff member suggested we head to The Fat Boy in Bucerías for lunch. She raved about the great reviews and how it was a local favorite. So, without much hesitation, I got us an Uber and we were on our way.

The drive was easy and scenic. I sat back and watched the landscape shift from the curated calm of Punta de Mita to the more lived-in vibrance of the surrounding area. When we arrived in Bucerias, I took a few moments to snap photos of the streets before we walked toward the restaurant.

From the moment we arrived at the restaurant and I stepped onto the sand, I knew this was exactly the kind of experience I’d been craving.

We settled into a table right on the beach, toes in the sand, salt in the air.

The staff wheeled over a bar cart to prepare our CADILLAC MARGARITAS table side – with generous pours and expert flair.

For lunch, we kept it simple: TACOS CAPEADOS DE PESCADO (crispy fish) and RES (steak). Both were flavorful, fresh, and deeply satisfying.

Even the occasional vendor weaving through the tables and waving away flies couldn’t interrupt the incredible experience of the meal. It was the gold standard of pleasure – and everything I wanted.

Lunch at The Fat Boy Seafood was one of those meals that reminded me why I love traveling in Mexico: the spontaneity, the hospitality, and the joy of discovering local gems by simply asking a trusted local for a recommendation.

Also, few things in life are better than taking sips from your margarita and then playing in the waves of the warm Pacific Ocean.
