Some of my best travel moments are from nudges and random pathways from passing conversations. After completing my Adult Group Snowboarding Lesson at Breckenridge Resorts back in March, I took a few minutes after class to thank my instructor. I told Ryan how much I appreciated the small but impactful tweaks he had helped me make to my technique. As we chatted, I also mentioned that I was thinking of riding the Keystone Ski Resort gondola the next day, to take a few photos.
“Oh!” he said. “I have passes I can give you.”
And just like that, he handed over two employee passes – valid for either Breckenridge or Keystone.
That one thoughtful gesture saved Rosemary and me nearly $100. All because I’d taken a moment to be honest and express gratitude. It reminded me: kindness really does come full circle.
Returning to Keystone stirred memories I hadn’t visited in years. I remembered ski biking with Emily, terrified the entire time. I remembered trudging around in stiff, unforgiving ski boots. I also remember feeling completely out of my element.
But this time, it felt different. There was an ease to it. A sense of coming full circle.
Parking was easy – and free.

We signed our waivers and traded in the passes. Within minutes, we were nestled into our own gondola car, slowly ascending toward the summit of Dercum Mountain.

At the top, the view was nothing short of life giving. The expansive mountain vista overlooking Dillon Reservoir, fresh mountain air, and dramatic clouds was – everything. We took our time walking around, taking photos and soaking in the experience.

The summit was lively with activity. Families with kids, mountain bikers, and even snow tubing in July thanks to a stretch of manmade snow.

When we left to head off to Frisco for lunch, I felt a deep sense of appreciation. I was truly thankful for Ryan’s kindness after my snowboarding lesson. I also truly appreciated the way the trip to Keystone unfolded.
For how a simple thank you, paired with a little curiosity and openness, led us exactly where we were meant to be.
