Block Kitchen + Bar

Block Kitchen + Bar in Banff serves globally inspired small plates and creative cocktails in a cozy, rustic setting

After a smooth check-in at the Fairmont Banff Springs, I relaxed in my hotel room and let the actual reality of being in a place I’d only dreamed about, unwind  me after a day of travel.  But soon, the evening walk around the grounds made me a bit hungrier than I expected.  So, it was time to seek out that perfect first dinner in Alberta: something local, cozy, and full of flavor. A short scan of the restaurant listing later and I found Block Kitchen + Bar,  just a convenient public shuttle ride away.

The moment I approached the warmly lit doorway of Block, I could feel I was in for something cozy – filled with locals and good food. The space was lively but relaxed.

To start my night,I began with the BIRDS OF PARADISE (Sheringham Akvavit, Cointreau, St Germain, Passion fruit puree, Lemon, Chickpea Brine). It was refreshing and delightfully smooth.

The evening unfolded like a tasting tour through global flavors, artfully woven into Banff’s mountain spirit. The PAN-FLASHED SPICY PRAWNS (Peanut sauce) were warm, spicy, and deeply comforting.

Then came the AHI TUNA TATAKI (lightly seared, sesame-crusted, seaweed salad, Zen drizzle). Being seared and sesame-crusted, its clean umami notes elevated by seaweed salad and a bright dressing.

But it was the next course that truly brought the cozy comfort I was craving. The TOKYO FRIES (Nori-dusted fries topped with Japanese mayo, takoyaki sauce & smoked bonito shavings) paired with KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN (tossed in spicy sweet Chili sauce).

Admittedly, I may have ordered enough for two. But as I sat back, full and entirely content, I realized that this was exactly what I had hoped for: a dinner that was both a welcome and an embrace.

Truly, my meal at Block Kitchen + Bar delivered a vibrant, flavorful introduction to Banff’s culinary scene.
