There are certain pleasures in life that I cherish. One of them is being able to physically see, talk to and enjoy my dad. Even in his 80s, it’s a pleasure to be in his presence and enjoy the time I have with him.
So, when it was time for my birthday, he surprised me with a request: lunch any where I liked. Now, I thought that I would have to pick a place that I projected he would like. Like IHOP or some place geared for older comforts.
But, in a strong impulse, I decided to act on the truth: I wanted sushi. I also wanted to try a place that I’d heard about for years: The Brother’s Sushi.

Settling in, I just wanted to make sure my dad was comfortable. And he just wanted to make sure I was happy.
The HOT GREEN TEA soothed me. The FRESH GRADED WASABI (from Half Moon Bay, San Francisco area) was sweet on the tongue. I loved the flavor – it was rich and natural vs reconstituted paste. And it tasted as such.
I ordered the SUSHI OMAKASE (Miso Soup, Salad, Signature Appetizer, 10 pieces Nigiri Sushi and Hand roll) and my dad did the same. I could tell that he wanted to make this lunch special. And I greatly appreciated him trusting me.
The salad and miso soup was perfection. The dressing on the salad was distinct and well rounded. While the miso soup had a delicious umami presence.
Then, came the SPICY TUNA RICE CAKES. These were deliciously filling.
Soon, it was time for the main events. First up, the DRY AGED TUNA (Bluefin Tuna), DRY AGED KURO TAI (Black Snapper), KAMASU (Barracuda), SAWARA (Japanese Ono), HOTATE (Fresh Hokkaido Scallop).
Second, the DRY AGED CHU TORO (Medium Fatty Bluefin Tuna), DRY AGED ORA KING SALMON, KINME (Golden Eye Snapper), AJI (Spanish Mackerel), ENGAWA (Halibut Fin).
However, the Spicy Tuna Rice Cake was so delicious – that it caused me to get full before I expect. So, I had our lovely server pack the reset of my meal to go.

The TORO PICKLE RADISH ROLL was stunning. I enjoyed it while packing for my trip to Mexico City.
Truly, the best birthday gift was the gift of time with my dad.
