Travel Guide: Belgium

Belgium is a captivating blend of medieval charm and modern vibrancy, where picturesque canals, grand Gothic architecture, and rich cultural history meet a thriving arts scene and cosmopolitan energy

As I explored Belgium, I felt its history unfold in every city, each with its own unique story. Belgium, once part of the Roman Empire, later saw itself divided between the Spanish and French before gaining independence in the 19th century.

Brussels, Belgium’s capital, is a place where history and modernity blend seamlessly. From the grandeur of the Grand Place, with its ornate 17th-century guildhalls, to the modern European Quarter, I felt how Brussels had evolved from its medieval roots into a center of European politics. The city’s rich blend of French and Flemish influences created an intriguing cultural mix, which I saw in the architecture, food, and language.

Bruges, where the medieval charm is so palpable, it almost feels like stepping back in time. The canals, cobblestone streets, and the towering Belfry Tower illustrated Bruges’ days as a trading hub in the Middle Ages, when it was one of Europe’s wealthiest cities. It’s a place where history feels alive, woven into every brick and every bridge.

Ghent is another city steeped in medieval glory but with a more modern pulse. Ghent’s rich history as a center of art and trade is visible in landmarks like Gravensteen Castle and the striking Saint Bavo’s Cathedral. I loved how the city balanced its historical depth with a vibrant student population and a thriving arts scene, making it feel both timeless and contemporary.

Belgium’s history is complex and layered, but in cities like Bruges, Ghent, and Brussels, it was clear that the past continues to shape the present in beautiful, unexpected ways.
