tommie Austin

tommie Austin is a unique European inspired concept hotel, sharing space to the Thompson hotel in Austin, Texas

At first glance, I thought my room at tommie Austin was cute. It was smaller and cheaper than the Thompson next door. And frankly, after staying at the Thompson in Washington DC, I wanted to try something different. Plus, with Hyatt, you gain bonus points if you try a new hotel concept. So, why not? I thought…

So, this was game I played with myself. Don’t know if I won or lost – but at least I played?

Location

It has a great location that makes it very easy to get around Austin. But, design wise, I would only recommend for a short amount of time.

The tommie literally shares the same space, valet and area as the Thompson.

Stay

The concept of Tommie hotels is cute – a smaller room with full access to the Thompson amenities. Very – European. Similar to another brand I enjoy staying at – the Hoxton. Also, the tommie visually more appealing than the Marriott’s AC Hotels. But, they are – small.

How small?

The desk was part of the sink.

The saving grace WAS the fact that I got upgraded into a corner room with three floor to ceiling windows. And I must admit that there’s really no wasted space + a cute lobby. But, between the cozy bathroom (And I say cozy because you shower next to the toilet) and the – dare I say – intimate space of the room…it was what could be considered a piere de tere and not much more. These rooms are only good for one person that doesn’t get claustrophobic easily. I would say – three nights at the very maximum.

Shockingly, I’d recommend the tommie, if the Thompson’s prices are too high. Guests get the same access to the pool (very important) and the shared dining area.

So, in short – if you are a solo traveler and staying for a short amount of time, the tommie may be for you.

Service

Geared toward the fun hip traveler, check in was at the check in desk cum coffee shop counter slash bar. Always down for an adventure, I ended up in a great conversation at check in with extremely friendly staff. But, it was very – unique to have stand in a bar area with my luggage, checking into a hotel.

However, overall – my three nights were good. But, only because I was a solo traveler that spent the majority of time outside of my room. If you need more space or are traveling with another person, consider the Thompson.
