Tanner's Coffee Co in Playa Del Rey, CA, is a cozy neighborhood café known for its freshly roasted coffee, laid-back atmosphere, and local community vibe.
There’s a special kind of freedom that comes with biking the Ballona Creek path. Because it’s so easy to access, it almost doesn’t feel that you’re biking in Los Angeles. But, on a weekend ride, there Rosemary and I were, once again, on the path from Culver City to Marina Del Rey.
At one point, after I noticed a random passer by say something suspect to some birders, I walked my bike over to them and tried to be friendly to them, to shake off what I’d heard that weirdo say. One of them gave them their binoculars and I was able to see a sandpiper close up. I’ve always admired their patience, the way they tune into the smallest details in nature.
After reaching the marina in Marina del Rey, Rosemary and I stopped. I immediately felt the need to find a chill and rest stop. Specifically, for coffee. The comfortable ride and vibe of the day and the ride had me craving something delicious and refreshing. So we made our way to Tanner’s Coffee for a break.
Locking up our bikes, we made our way inside. It felt it had been an unfathomable amount of time since I’d last stepped food through those doors.
I ordered the PEANUT BUTTER AÇAI SMOOTHIE (Acai, granola) and the LOX OF LOVE (salmon on an open faced bagel). Both were outstandingly delicious.
Sitting outside at Tanner’s with our smoothies and food, we couldn’t help but feel accomplished. Also, it was here that Rosemary mentioned that Foo Fighters was now considered classic rock. I felt that she read me for accidental truth as I slowly realized that my current likes mimic a middle aged white male. I smoke meat, love fast cars, Foo Fighters (I’ve seen two of their shows) drink beer and…. I’m not a middle age white guy by any means. But, the way I laughed when Rosemary and I realized that – was hilarious.
The hum of the city felt far away, and we sat there, chatting and watching the world pass. It was one of those hours that feels simple yet deeply satisfying—good company, a great ride, and a spot to unwind.
