LeRoy and Lewis Barbecue

LeRoy and Lewis Barbecue in Austin is known for its innovative approach to Texas barbecue, offering creative cuts of meat and seasonal sides.

After an absolutely lovely time at Cosmic Coffee & Drinks, I began to crave some delicious Texas barbecue. After talking with the extremely friendly staff behind the coffee bar, I found out that LeRoy and Lewis Barbecue food truck had graduated into their own brick and mortar storefront. Debating on if I wanted to drive to Driftwood and revisit Salt Lick Barbecue, I listened to their recommendation and made my way instead to LeRoy and Lewis.

Stepping into the restaurant, I immediately loved the essence of the vintage styled modern barbecue spot. Excited, I made my way to the ordering counter.  I tried a sample of the  beef cheek and briefly considered getting a plate.

However, based on the raving reviews from the staff at Cosmic, I zeroed in on ordering the L&L BURGER (with pickles, onion and sauce).

I loved watching the grill sizzle with my buns.

Now, this burger comes with American cheese on it. It’s not stated on the menu – which they should. Because when I noticed the cheese, I politely requested itself removal.

I also ordered two small sides, to create a medium side: the KALE CAESAR SLAW and the KIMCHI.

I LOVED the generous use of fresh cracked pepper. But the best part? the Barbecue sauce. Now, what makes this barbecue stand out is that the base of it is beets.

Yes, beets.

It’s the LeRoy and Lewis Barbecue’s Beet BBQ Sauce, shipped out by Chud’s – who also made the custom barbecue smokers out back.

My meal at LeRoy and Lewis made me wish that more delicious barbecue existed in California. Now, I love Bludso’s BBQ in Los Angeles and Copper Top BBQ in Big Pine. But, innsofar as the new school of Texas styled barbecue, LeRoy and Lewis is in a delicious class by itself.
