A refined dinner at Damian offers elevated and innovative Mexican cuisine in Downtown Los Angeles, California

Having time available for dinner, I texted Johann to see if he was free. After a quick search, reservations at Damian were agreed upon and we were both on our way.

Damian is a contemporary Mexican restaurant located in downtown Los Angeles. Owned by chef Enrique Olvera, Damian has quickly gained attention for its unique culinary offerings and stylish ambiance.

Browsing the menu, I appreciated the distinctive take on Mexican and Californian flavors in such a lush space. It was a contemporary aesthetic, featuring a sleek interior and a vibrant atmosphere of patterns. It reminded me of my experience at HA’ by Carlos Gaytan in Cancun.

We began with the GUACAMOLE (Herbs) and the UNI TOSTADA (Caesar Salad, Parmigiano).

Next up was the CEVICHE (Olive Kosho, Sungold Tomato).

The order of CELERY ROOT (Chicatana Salsa Macha, Mole Blanco, Xnipec) and DUCK AL PASTOR (Pineapple) was simply a match made in culinary heaven.

For dessert, we finished with the HIBISCUS MERINGUE.

A few months later, we returned.

To start, we had the SALAD (Market Greens, Falafel, Heirloom Tomato) was lush and vibrant. It looked like a garden of greens was growing out of the bowl.

The OCTOPUS HUARACHE (Potato, Chipotle Mayonnaise) was – something that I let Johann eat. I think I had a bite of the octopus and was like – it’s delicious, but not for me.

Next was the QUESADILLA SUIZA (Mushroom, Gruyere, Truffle) which was unique and rich on the tongue.

The main dish, the PESCADO A LA BRASA (Cha Yote, Salsa Cruda)

The NIXTAMALIZED PAPAYA (Yogurt, Habanero) finished the evening off beautifully.

Now, if you’re looking for a more relaxed ambiance but absolutely delicious refined Mexican cuisine menu, I would highly suggest Mirate in Los Feliz.

But, if you want an excellent, cultivated experience, Damian is a well rounded choice for inspired Mexican cuisine in Downtlow Los Angeles.
